i think i used to have things pretty put together when it comes to music. i'd be all over stuff when it was about to come out or even before it came out. i used to go to tons of concerts. the last year or so though, not so much. i guess i was reminded of this not so long ago when someone asked me what i'd been listening to lately - like i still had it together, and i was sampling new genres and stuff. i'm not sure if i was honest or not, but lately i've just been going with stuff i've heard in movies or on tv (commercials even). so here's the last five songs i downloaded from itunes and some explaining. let me know your last five and if you have it more together than i do.
5. high flying bird - elton john. so weird, i went on this big elton john kick in high school. bought like all his albums. but i'd never heard this song at all until i heard it in the background of a show a few minutes ago. good stuff.
4. come to me (peace) - mary j. blige. there was this "live from abbey road" special on one of the directv stations that had mary j, james blunt, and dashboard confessional. the live version of this song was unreal. i've heard her on lots of things, but i've never appreciated how great her voice is.
3. the mountains win again - blues traveler. yeah, i definitely had this album when it first came out and listened to it all the time. this was my favorite song on it. no idea where the album is now - got lost in a move maybe. but the song was on a coors commercial or something, and i remembered how great it was. it's really great to scream out the high notes while riding your scooter. prove me wrong.
2. robots - flight of the conchords. i have it on dvd, but the "with traces of lead" part made it necessary to download to the ipod. genius.
1. simple man - graham nash. i'm guessing this guy was a member of crosby, stills, nash, and young. never heard the song before, and it's in the opening of the movie "reign over me" which was really pretty great. don cheadle can't really miss in my eyes. gorgeous song.

1 leona naess "thirteens". to start, i generally get albums and not singles- this is her latest album. shes diana ross' step-daughter, ryan adams' ex-girlfriend, and she sang on the counting crows "black and blue"...if any of that helps anything. i like her a lot.
with me- if i like someone enough- ill pretty much buy their albums until they make a couple that are really awful. shes on that list- her first two albums are really, really good. this ones pretty ok so far, but it sounds- overall- maybe too much like her last one (which was my least favorite, though its still ok). still chewing on it...
2 matthew sweet "sunshine lies". also an album, also one i got without even thinking about it- hes in my top ten artists. his last album was a god-forsaken abomination, so this is tricky. maybe it sounds better than it really is simply cause its not overwhelmingly awful, you know? im digging it, for the most part. i think the problem (the part that carried over from his last album) is that im not relating to his lyrics the way i used to. maybe weve grown apart? there are some really good songs, and im still getting my head around it, but i dont know if the connections there anymore.
3 kay hanley "weaponize". she was the singer in letters to cleo- and you know how i feel about girl-fronted indie rock bands of the 90s. she has, i think, one of the best rock voices out there. really clean and strong, not smoky or scratchy or screamy. shes not a great lyricist, but theres generally some good melodies. the last song, though, is faux hip-hop-ish with some girl rapper...its awful. i have no idea how or why it happened.
im liking this the most of these three newest albums (for me), but its still one i put on in the background, dont really pay attention to, you know? so yeah, not a stellar crop...
4 "round here" and "true colors", both covers by kasey chambers. im dying to find her version of edie brickells "circle of friends", but dude- its just not there. anywhere. i found it on one website, but you can only download it if youre in england. how does that even make sense? im eventually gonna cave and buy the single its a b-side of...
in any case, i like her voice (and both of these songs) so i settled for them for now. but i shall have her version of "circle of friends"- oh yes- i shall have it. (oh, and i totally havent listened to either of these yet- chronologically these are the most recent, just got them a few hours ago)
5 "bad reputation" freedy johnston. the singles i do download go onto huge "albums"- i just sort them together by random classification. "80s", "motown", "oldies" (that arent motown, see?), etc.
the first line of this song (i know ive got a bad reputation, and it isnt just talk, talk, talk...) came into my head a few weeks ago, and i finally got around to it. i didnt remember the rest of the song very well at all, but its really good. i dont know if id even say i "liked" it before, but its a very good song.
and for whatever reason it (not the song itself, but when i sat down to get it) made me think of "i love you period", so i got that too. i tend to get every song i can think of that i might, just MIGHT want to listen to again someday, however remote that chance is.
...which is why i have a lot of music i really dont need at all.
anyways, "the mountains win again" is on my 90s comp. i never had that album, but mark did, and i used to play it there all the time. that and "(whats the story) morning glory".
i had a list for a long time of these totally random songs i wanted- but was never going to get the album- that was on it. then i finally stumbled into the twentieth century and got an ipod, so that was one i got very early on...back when i still used itunes, even. turns out you can find almost anything for "free" on the internet. who knew?
